On Thursday, March 21, the Poetry Salon will meet at Abbot Public Library to discuss the poetry of Yehuda Amichai, Israel’s most popular poet. Born in Germany and named Ludwig Pfeuffer, Amichai fled the Nazis in 1935 with his family and moved to Israel. He chose a literary name: Yehuda (“God be praised”) and Amichai (“the Jewish people live”) as he became a published poet and novelist. We will be reading his poetry in translation, thus losing some of the nuances of the original Hebrew language. What translates very well is how he treats issues of day-to-day life as well as philosophical issues of life and death. His work is characterized by gentle and often surprising imagery. Like many secular Israeli poets, he struggles with religious faith.

Please join Claire Keyes for the March 15 Poetry Salon from 2 p.m. - 4 p.m. at Abbot Public Library on Brook Road or online via Zoom. To attend via Zoom, please register HERE.. After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting. No registration required for in-person attendance.
